This review aims to tackle the challenge of understanding how visual design cues can affect behavioural outcomes in a food context. The review answers two key questions (1) What are the effects of the most important visual design cues on behavioural outcomes and how can they be explained? (2) What are the research gaps in this area? We start from a comprehensive taxonomy of visual design cues delineating the most important visual design cues. Next, we evaluate the extant research based on a structured, narrative literature review on visual design cues in the food domain. We differentiate between object processed and spatially processed visual design cues in food choice contexts and show how they affect behavioural outcomes through a range of psychological processes (attention, affective-, cognitive- and motivational reactions, food perceptions and attitudes). We end with recommendations which take into account the current food store context, the state-of-art in measuring psychological processes and behavioural outcomes and the specific food-, person- and context-related moderators. This review offers guidance for research to untangle the complexity of the effect of visual design cues in a food choice context.
Renal transplant recipients have a high peri-operative risk for cardiovascular events. The post-transplantation period also carries a risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death in these patients. We aimed to assess the risk of MI, the specific morbidity profile of MI after transplantation as well as the long-term prognosis after MI in renal transplantation (RT) patients regarding cardiovascular (CV) death and all-cause death.
From a French national medical information database, all of the patients seen in French hospitals in 2013 with at least 5-years follow-up were retrospectively identified and patients without transplantation but with previous dialysis at baseline were excluded. There were 17,526 patients with RT and 3,288,857 with no RT.
Among these patients, 1020 in the RT group (5.8%), and 93,320 in the non-RT group (2.8%) suffered acute MI during a median follow-up of 5.4 years. After multivariable adjustment, risk of MI was higher in RT patientsars). RT is independently associated with a 45% higher risk of MI than in patients without RT, with a predominance of NSTEMI. MI in patients with RT is independently associated with a 15% higher risk of all-cause death than that in patients with MI and no RT.
MI is not an uncommon complication after RT (incidence of around 5.8% after 5 years). RT is independently associated with a 45% higher risk of MI than in patients without RT, with a predominance of NSTEMI. MI in patients with RT is independently associated with a 15% higher risk of all-cause death than that in patients with MI and no RT.Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid-bound vesicles released from cells under physiological and pathological conditions. Basing on biogenesis, dimension, content and route of secretion, they can be classified into exosomes, microvesicles (MVs) and apoptotic bodies. EVs have a key role as bioactive mediators in intercellular communication, but they are also involved in other physiological processes like immune response, blood coagulation, and tissue repair. The interest in studying EVs has increased over the years due to their involvement in several diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and their potential role as biomarkers in diagnosis, therapy, and in drug delivery system development. Nowadays, the improvement of mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques allows the characterization of the EV protein composition to deeply understand their role in several diseases. In this review, a critical overview is provided on the EV’s origin and physical properties, as well as their emerging functional role in both physiological and disease conditions, focusing attention on the role of exosomes in CVDs. The most important cardiac exosome proteomic studies will be discussed giving a qualitative and quantitative characterization of the exosomal proteins that could be used in future as new potential diagnostic markers or targets for specific therapies.Recently, sarcopenia was identified as a risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adults. We here investigated the association between skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and NAFLD in non-obese children and adolescents. A retrospective medical chart review was performed for individuals aged 9-15 years diagnosed with NAFLD. Healthy volunteers aged 9-15 years were recruited as controls. Participants were subject to laboratory tests, abdominal sonography, and multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. SMM data were calculated as the skeletal muscle-to-body fat ratio (MFR), and the diagnosis of fatty liver was established by abdominal sonography. The control and NAFLD groups included 73 and 53 individuals, respectively. DMX-5084 nmr No significant difference was observed in gender and body mass index (BMI) distribution between the groups. Mean MFR was significantly lower in individuals with NAFLD than in those without (0.83 vs. 1.04, p = 0.005). After adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and serum glucose, the risk of having NAFLD was significantly associated with a decreased MFR (p = 0.016). NAFLD is significantly associated with relatively low SMM in non-obese children and adolescents. Increasing SMM, such as weight training, can be suggested as one of the treatment strategies in pediatric NAFLD without obesity.Infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria are becoming a major healthcare emergence with millions of reported cases every year and an increasing incidence of deaths. An advanced diagnostic platform able to directly detect and identify antimicrobial resistance in a faster way than conventional techniques could help in the adoption of early and accurate therapeutic interventions, limiting the actual negative impact on patient outcomes. With this objective, we have developed a new biosensor methodology using an ultrasensitive nanophotonic bimodal waveguide interferometer (BiMW), which allows a rapid and direct detection, without amplification, of two prevalent and clinically relevant Gram-negative antimicrobial resistance encoding sequences the extended-spectrum betalactamase-encoding gene blaCTX-M-15 and the carbapenemase-encoding gene blaNDM-5 We demonstrate the extreme sensitivity and specificity of our biosensor methodology for the detection of both gene sequences. Our results show that the BiMW biosensor can be employed as an ultrasensitive (attomolar level) and specific diagnostic tool for rapidly (less than 30 min) identifying drug resistance.
