Charles Washington

Dad was on the USMeggs ship with 5200 troops and crew of 250. They didn’t know where they were headed but had a good idea. He landed in Korea on Christmas Day 1950. He took supplies on the train to the camps. He also dispatched. He was a brakeman. After being on the train and going through tunnels he got very sick. They thought he had pneumonia and gave him an aspirin. He couldn’t walk. They flew him to Osaka, Japan. He was there 3 weeks. He heard them say shut his door he is going to die. He would crawl over to the door and open it every time they closed it. They finally sent him to Fitz Simmons hospital in Denver, Colorado. Mom would ride the bus out to see him. He was in the hospital for 17 months with pleurisy where they drew fluid off his lungs every day. He weighed 128 pounds. They said he would not live and if he did he would never work. He is the most determined and hard worker I know. I am proud to be his daughter. He is my hero. He will be 98 years young in November.
