Rasmus Movin

The Danish contribution to the U.N. efforts in Korea is the hospitalship Jutlandia, which has three trips to Korea. It is a rebuilt cargo carrier and leaves for Korea 23. January 1951.

Capacity is 300 passengers and 93 personnel.

There are 5 hospital departments:

General surgery

neurosurgery

thorax/chest surgery

jaw surgery

and a department for epidemic, psychiatric and x-ray.

15 doctors, 40 nurses, 20 nurses aids and administrative personnel are onboard.

There are three operating rooms. They never managed to put in air condition as departure had been delayed, so in the end they sailed without this commodity. In the heat in Korea this meant that they often performed surgery at night when the temperature was lower.

Rasmus Movin was one of the doctors on board. At home his wife Nina was raising their four young children. An endeavor as demanding, as the one Rasmus embarked on.

When Jutlandia after ½ a year sailed home towards Denmark with wounded after the first voyage, then Rasmus Movin went ashore and helped set up a children’s hospital in Taegu. Others from Jutlandia helped him in this. The need was great and they were working non-stop during this period.

As 1951 came to an end he finally exhausted returned home.

For his work in Korea he was given the American bronze star.

Rasmus lived by a saying – credo:

‘Nothing is impossible. Do it today or somebody might come around tomorrow thinking it’s not impossible, and do it.’
